Why natural sunscreen?
Now that you are introduced to our 4 sun care products let’s dive a little deeper into information about the sun, the differences between chemical and mineral sunscreens, how SPF works, and some specific info on these sun care products.
First and foremost, I think it needs to be said that the sun is not bad…it is our friend. However, just like other things, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. The sun helps your body create serotonin, which has been linked to improved mood and mental health. It also assists with the production and regulation of melatonin, supports circadian rhythms, and improves sleep cycles. Sunlight helps you synthesize vitamin D, which promotes calcium absorption (leading to stronger muscles and bones), and can even support proper immune responses—among other health benefits. Just remember you want short exposure to the sun, unless you are protected with sunscreen, to avoid the possible negatives of the sun.
The two primary types of sunscreen—chemical and mineral—work differently, though both protect the skin. Chemical sunscreens are designed to absorb UV rays, while mineral sunscreens reflect UV rays. A sunscreen’s active ingredients determine if it’s chemical or mineral. Chemical sunscreens, which absorb UV rays, usually require 20 minutes for the ingredients to be effective and can be problematic. Some chemical sunscreen filters eventually degrade when exposed to UV rays, generating free radicals. Others can penetrate through the skin. Some active ingredients from chemical sunscreens have been found lingering in the bloodstream long after the wearer’s time in the sun was over! Certain active ingredients can also act as hormone disruptors and cause skin allergies or other concerns. This is one reason why we chose mineral sunscreen for our natural sunscreen.
Mineral sunscreen filters serve as a physical barrier, reflecting UV rays for broad-spectrum protection. They don’t degrade when exposed to UV rays. Plus, because they act like a physical barrier, they’re effective immediately. The main mineral sunscreen filters are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These are both recognized as generally safe for all skin types. We use zinc oxide in our natural mineral sunscreens.
Sun protection factor (SPF) indicates how much longer your skin is protected relative to if you weren’t wearing any sunscreen. For example, if you were to use an SPF 30 product properly, it’d take you 30 times longer to burn compared to without sunscreen. SPF 15 actually provides the biggest jump in protection compared to no sunscreen. While no sunscreen offers 0% protection (obviously), SPF 15 offers approximately 93% protection when used properly. SPF 30 jumps to about 97% protection with proper use. After that, the protection you get from using a higher SPF is negligible. No sunscreen can offer 100% protection, but even SPF 15 gets you close!

Also, look for “broad spectrum” on sunscreen labels. This addition on the label refers to the types of UV rays the sunscreen protects against: UVA, UVB, and UVC. You can read more about the different UV types on the graphic below.

Now that you’re an expert on sun care, let’s dive a little more into our new Sun product line! When creating this line, we knew we had to meet three key objectives to create products we were proud to introduce to the market.
First, the products needed to be good for all skin types. The formulas chosen are nourishing, antioxidant-rich, and hydrating. They also leave minimal residue, so they accommodate all skin tones!
Second, the products needed to be environmentally conscious. All formulas are vegan-friendly and cruelty-free. Plus, they’re reef-safe! They can be used in places that restrict sunscreens that aren’t reef safe, and they’ll help keep our underwater ecosystems healthier and happier.
Third, the products needed to have clean, green formulas. On top of being mineral-powered by non-nano zinc oxide, every dōTERRA Sun product is free of harsh, synthetic ingredients—including oxybenzone, parabens, phthalates, and more.
The comprehensive delivery system of dōTERRA Sun includes three SPF formats. The lotion has a convenient flip cap, so you won’t lose the lid during application. The stick is packaged in a thick twist-up tube that fits comfortably in your hand. And the spray is packaged in an aluminum non-aerosol spray bottle that delivers a continuous 360-degree application for easy, overall coverage.
All sunscreens are at least SPF 30, water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, and broad-spectrum protective, which means they block both UVB and UVA rays.
Rounding out the product line is the After Sun Soothing Body Spray. This product is the perfect companion to our SPF products. We’ve got you covered while you play in the sun and afterward. Now it’s time to get excited to go play outside…of course, after you order your sun products!
